Saints Unplugged Community Reads Project Launches August 26
Borrow a Copy of The Anxious Generation at WOW or through the Library

Go unplugged with a community reads event!  This fall, the St. Charles Public Library is encouraging the community to read the thought-provoking book, “The Anxious Generation,” which spotlights how today’s technology is shaping childhood, and encourages families to build healthier digital habits.

Funded through a grant from the St. Charles Area Community Foundation, the library has purchased multiple copies of Johnathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation,” which will be available for checkout at What’s on Wednesday (WOW) on August 26 or through the library.  The book examines the sharp rise in anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges among adolescents since the early 2010s, arguing that the shift from a play-based childhood is a primary cause.  Drawing on research, Haidt explains how smartphones and social media have disrupted children’s social, emotional, and neurological development through factors such as sleep loss, social comparison, addiction, and reduced independence.  The book concludes with practical recommendations for parents, schools, technology companies, and policymakers to help restore healthier childhood experiences and improve the well-being of young people.

In addition, community members will be encouraged to reflect on their digital habits before, during, and after they have read the book.  The St. Charles Public Library and St. Charles Community Education will co-host guided discussions on the book and in applying its lessons to daily life.  The first discussion is scheduled for September 22, and will feature Katherine Myers, Executive Director of LiveMore ScreenLess.  A book study will be held in November, followed by a game night that will provide an evening of screen-free fun!

Saints Unplugged is a community initiative dedicated to helping individuals and families build healthy, balanced relationships with technology.  Through educational programs, community events, and local partnerships, we encourage meaningful connections, practical digital wellness strategies, and opportunities to unplug, reconnect, and thrive in today’s digital world.
